MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE - ADAM BURGESS

We are super excited to introduce Adam @slalom_burgess, a brilliant slalom canoer that has taken on a minimalistic lifestyle to support Mother Earth. When he is not training for the 2021 Olympics he is big into his yoga and loves a good cup of specialty coffee.

Below you can read the script from his MIAB interview and we have also added a few brilliant bits for you to get to know Adam better!

.

WHO ARE YOU?

I am Adam Burgess and I am a canoe slalom athlete, so always in the water. I am also a Yogi and really big into my specialty coffee.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AS ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE AS YOU ARE TODAY?

I think like a lot of people, it’s the perspective gained from travel. In particular, I think about a trip I did a few years ago. When I came home and realized that I had lived out of a suitcase for 2-3 months and really didn’t need half the stuff that I owned, and from that point really I’ve been on a journey of minimalism of owning less. That goes hand-in-hand with being more environmentally aware because you’re consuming much less and taking much greater care in the things you bring into your life. So, for me that has been the biggest shift, getting interested in minimalism.

IN WHAT WAY ARE YOU BRINGING POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR COMMUNITY?

I think I am just really enthusiastic and passionate about this subject and when I talk about it people hear it. I am never pushy but I like to share the small things that I do and if I do see a friend of mine taking an interest, I will ask how is that going, or maybe you could try this. Just give that little encouragement here and there.

NAME ONE SMALL BUT POWERFUL CHANGE PEOPLE CAN MAKE

I want to share the biggest one that I did for me, and it’s something I feel a little bit guilty about. I used to call it my sparkling water habit, and I used to get through so many plastic bottles of sparkling water, so I decided that had to stop. I made the change and bought a Soda Stream, and now I just carbonate my own water. The cartridges come in the post and once they are empty you post them right back for free and you just refill them for you, so it really is no waste at all and I get to continue drinking sparkling water

PLEASE SHARE A KEY RESOURCE THAT YOU LOOK TO FOR GUIDANCE

The best resource I found is a page on Fakebook called Zero Waste Heroes. Some of the people on there are phenomenal, they waste literally nothing and throw nothing away. And whilst that is incredibly difficult for 99% of us in this society we live in currently, it is a really good tool to go to and pick up the odd little hints and tips along the way. Because ultimately it Is the sum of all small changes that we can make that overall add up to quite a big change, and the more of us doing that, the more it's going to catch on and hopefully contribute to the system-wide changes that need to occur, to help us all out and save the planet.

I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT

Mostly I'm passionate about Canoe Slalom, the best sport in the world. I'm particularly fascinated by the artistry of it and aspire to paddle with a style that allows spectators to 'feel' what I'm experiencing in those moments.

I'm interested in being a 'good person' and I mean that in the way it first comes across but also in the sense of being good at and interested in a variety of things. I'm into specialty coffee, yoga, minimalism, reading, music (guitar and a tiny bit of piano), plants, climbing, gymnastics, breath training, cold-exposure, wild swimming, and more.
