She has grown up with a sustainable mindset and feels just like home at CRU Kafe where sustainability is as important as the organic and fair-trade coffee they brew ☕. Being a sustainable business in today’s environment is not always easy, but CRU Kafe is a fantastic example of how business and sustainability can go hand-in-hand with the customer and planet at the forefront.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE - KATIE COLVIN AT CRU KAFE

WHO ARE YOU?

Hi! 👋🌊 I am Katie Colvin and I am head of marketing at CRU Kafe. CRU Kafe is an ethical and organic coffee company from London. We produce coffee in lots of different formats and we aim for all our coffee to come in sustainable recyclable packaging, including our recyclable capsules for Nespresso machines or recyclable coffee bags. We are trying our best to be as sustainable as possible.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AS ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE AS YOU ARE TODAY?

I think this came a long time before my job at CRU Kafe. Its kind of like a young millennial person in London and a lot of people my age are very aware of the environment and what we need to do as a generation to make it better. My parents always instilled in me to recycle and small things like that. And my sister actually, is an environmental consultant and I have always been inspired by her want and need to do better for the planet. So I would say that my sister was my inspiration for me wanting to be more sustainable.

IN WHAT WAY ARE YOU BRINGING POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR COMMUNITY?

What is so lovely about CRU Kafe and the team is that we care as much about the environment as we do about producing coffee and that’s why we are striving to become as sustainably viable business as possible. Whether that’s by figuring out our carbon footprint which we have done and making all aspects of our business completely carbon neutral, which is definitely on the agenda this year.

CRU Kafe was born when Nespresso lost their patent on their capsule shape and the need due to seeing a gap in the market for a more sustainable option for something which is consumed so much, and if we can make sure that the capsules are recyclable and the coffee inside is organic and fair trade then we are striving to do better. If we can get as many people as possible to drink CRO Kafe rather than Nespresso, it can all factor into making the biggest change. And yes it is still a consumable, so we’re not perfect, but we are striving in the right direction to brew ☕ our way to a better world.

NAME ONE SMALL BUT POWERFUL CHANGE PEOPLE CAN MAKE

The thing in this question which really helped me become more environmentally conscious is the SMALL BUT POWERFUL. As I mentioned before, you can find out your carbon footprint, and as individuals, you can be overwhelmed by the need to change so many aspects of your life, but if you strip it all back and look at the things you do every day and seeing if you can, one-by-one make little changes for the better.

 

So one small change is using a reusable water bottle, you could start with one of these really cool once from Nature Unite. Drinking water is something you will do every day and potentially also drinking coffee, so make sure that you’re not getting takeaway cups every time, so for example get a CRO Kafe Keep Cup. Over 6 months your footprint from single-use plastic bottles and takeaway cups could massively be reduced. Other small changes, particularly for girls could be to look at what beauty products we are using and do we need to be using face wipes every day.

 

Basically, to be looking at the things we do every day and then make those changes very gradually and realistically so that those changes are more likely to stick and become lifestyle changes rather than a two-week sustainable change. Take little steps at a time to make it as long-lasting as possible.

PLEASE SHARE A KEY RESOURCE THAT YOU LOOK TO FOR GUIDANCE

Talking from a brand perspective and us wanting to communicate a sustainable brand to the public, it is a very careful topic because you can be greenwashed so often by people and it's important to look for brands that do it in such a tactful way.

 

The one brand that really impresses and inspires me and I constantly look a what communications they are doing, is Patagonia. They belong the 1% for the Planet initiative, which is a global movement that inspired businesses and people to make daily changes to their everyday lives. For them, it is all about rejecting fast fashion and making clothes long-lasting and hard-wearing so that we are investing in products that are more sustainable. They inspire me all the time through their messaging to be more sustainable.
