We are super excited to introduce Clare @clarabara, who is a Marine Biologist, Science Communicator, SUP instructor for Travel With a Paddle @travelwithapaddle; a community that combines a love of stand up paddle and environmental education.
Below you can read the script from her MIAB interview and we have also added a few brilliant bits for you to get to know Clare a bit better!
WHO ARE YOU?
I am Clare Baranowski, a Marine Biologist and Science Communicator for Travel with a Paddle.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AS ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE AS YOU ARE TODAY?
Throughout my research around the world, I have started to see real changes to our ocean. Whether it is the impact from tourism or plastics, it has started a real fire inside of me - especially over the last five years.
IN WHAT WAY ARE YOU BRINGING POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR COMMUNITY?
We are lucky enough to be able to take people to really cool, remote locations and really immerse them in the marine world. We use this opportunity to educate people on what everyone can do, collectively and individually, to help the future of our planet. So whether we are on top of the ocean SUP-ing or surfing, or under the ocean snorkeling and diving we show everyone the marine environment. By experiencing it first hand, we feel that they will learn to love it. We collect data for citizen science and then we go home and talk about everything we can do to make positive changes through presentations and talk stories.
NAME ONE SMALL BUT POWERFUL CHANGE PEOPLE CAN MAKE
For me, it was calculating my carbon footprint online. I highly recommend you all do it as it lets you know where you are consuming carbon and how you can effectively reduce it.
PLEASE SHARE A KEY RESOURCE THAT YOU LOOK TO FOR GUIDANCE
For me it’s Sea Legacy, which is an amazing environmental organisation. They travel around the world and use photography to highlight changes to our planet and also reach a really large audience. Also, sports people, I find everyone that swims in the Arctic or the Antarctic fantastically motivating. Even on a cold day, when I don’t want to go outside or go in the British ocean. It really encourages me to interact with that fantastic ecosystem.
